Australia Day festivities and information for guests

Published on Friday 22nd January 2016

You may have noticed an extra spring in everyone’s step as a public holiday approaches. While it is not quite a ‘long weekend’ the Australia Day public holiday still gives us all a chance to have a day off work and be grateful for the magnificent country that we are in, whether it is as a citizen or a guest.

The Australia Day Skyworks hosted by the City of Perth is the largest celebration in the country, with over 300,000 people attending the fireworks show on the Swan River. The day will kick off at 3pm with a range of free family-friendly activities for the general public, and finishing off with a 30-minutes skyshow which includes dazzling pyrotechnics and lasers. The Visit Perth City website outlines a Program for all activities happening on the day. The hotspots will be the South Perth foreshore and Langley Park which provide the best vantage points on the ground for the fireworks. In addition there will be an aviation display featuring vintage aircraft and the water regatta.

Guests of Mountway Holiday Apartments may be able to steal a sneak peak from their room window, or the stairwell of the building. In addition, we have great BBQ facilities which is perfect for having an ‘Oz Day sausage sizzle’.

Most importantly, guests will need to be mindful of road closures that will occur on the day, with both Mount and Cliff Street only being accessible to local traffic only from 6:00am. This means that guests staying at Mountway who need to enter and exit via these routes will need to provide evidence to traffic personnel of their stay at Mountway. This can be done by showing them a receipt or booking form, or even a room key. For more information on road closures and how this may affect you, please refer to the Visit Perth City website.

In addition we anticipate that parking will be in high demand. Please be mindful of this and try to reserve your parking early. We request that guests also do not ‘double park’ as this leads to other guests being trapped in the car park and unable to leave. Should you have issues on the day with parking, please see the staff member on duty in reception, or call the General Manager on 040 300 8145.

Finally, we understand that Australia Day Celebrations are exciting for everyone. Please celebrate responsibly to ensure that it is a fun and safe day for all.
